While Amazon.com has become the most popular marketplace for
resume book purchases (and they
are reliable and offer direct links), we strongly suggest that you start by
searching eBay. Ebay's prices are the best by far and it is also extremely
reliable and very easy to register, even if you're a first-time user.
Below you will find our recommendations for books for your
resume needs. Depending
on your particular situation and needs, you may also want to consider:
Resume
Books
McGraw-Hill's Big Red Book of Resumes
Buy this book from Amazon.com
Consider this book to be a good starting point when you
are ready to get down to the business of drafting your
resume. Resumes from many different industries are laid
out in a nice, logical flow. This is a great reference
book and is often used by college career centers and libraries.
The Everything Resume Book: Great Resumes for Every
Situation by Burton Jay Nadler
Buy this book from Amazon.com
We're actually quite surprised that this book isn't more
popular on Amazon given our review as well as those of
other contributors. Maybe that's getting ready to
change. In any event, we liked the tips for overcoming
procrastination and turning out a resume in a day. (Time
is money, you know.) The 100+ sample resumes are also
more than adequate.
The Executive Resume Book by
Loretta D. Foxman
Buy this book from Amazon.com
There are not many books that specifically cover the
executive resume market, but this one, quite
fortunately, does a pretty good job. We'd be happier if
it had been updated since 1989 as the typewriter tips
can be a bit distracting. But regardless, there is
plenty of insight from the hiring managers of these
executive positions included within.
Resumes for Dummies, Fourth Edition by Joyce Lain Kennedy
Buy this book from Amazon.com
This book is clearly one of the better in the for
Dummies series. The writer makes good use of tempo and
humor to keep this read as interesting and easy as
possible. If we want to get picky (and we did a
tremendous amount of research for this website), we
would slightly ding the book for being geared towards a
mass market and leaving students, new graduates, and
mothers returning to the workplace in particular with a
little less breadth than they would probably prefer.
The Elements Of Resume Style by Scott Bennett
Buy this book from Amazon.com
This is a very
well organized book geared more towards entry-level job applicants. It was a
pleasant relief to see how Scott Bennett so simply and eloquently maintained the
focus on accomplishments and qualifications and not an outrageous combination of
different font styles guaranteed to get the hiring manager's attention – but for
all the wrong reasons!
